“You know,” my aunt says to me at dinner, “a can of tomatoes has gone up in price, but the size of the cans have gotten smaller!”
She is angry as she says this.
I side eye my boyfriend as he eats. He ignores me. I look at my aunt.
“I don’t know what to tell you,” I respond. “It’s not 1975 anymore. Prices go up. It is what it is.”
My aunt glares.
“I’m telling you, it’s theft!”
“Theft!” she responds.
She calms down.
“The world is changing,” she adds.
I nod in agreement and pay our bill.
